The number of BGVs that need rescuing or rehoming each year varies - it can be a bit like buses, quiet for a while then two come along at once - and each situation is different. Even if potential owners looked up information about the breed beforehand, they may fail to understand what hounds are really like and their desire to have an adorable puppy overrides seeing the breed before they buy one and making sure they know all that is involved in owning a BGV. This is sometimes brought about by breeders not being completely frank with potential buyers. Being told at the outset that these are scent-hounds who, given half a chance, will be off on the trail will help someone considering the breed to decide whether it really is the right one for them - and, in turn, possibly prevent a BGV from ending up in rescue.

If you are thinking about having a BGV, take your time, do your homework first, see the breed and make sure this is the breed for you. There are information leaflets and books available and any reputable breeder will be only too happy to invite you to see his/her BGVs and spend time with you answering your questions.

Of course none of us knows what will happen in the future. Circumstances change - there may be a move of home, even going abroad, or a break-up of a relationship - and sometimes it isn't always possible to keep the family dog any more. However, when contemplating buying a puppy, do think about whether your lifestyle will accommodate having a dog, whether you can give it enough of your time and what is likely to happen in the future - because, unfortunately, many people buy dogs of all breeds without enough forethought and planning..
And I just fell on my paws!
